Who we are
Whyte Noise are a family band from Scotland, comprising of Ciaran (son), Susan (mum) and Gordon Whyte (dad). Although music has been an integral part of the Whyte family life like, forever, this current music project only emerged in early 2025. So, what was going on before then, you may ask….
Gordon started his musical education at an early age, learning to play the piano at the age of 7. His experience of choral singing at primary school gave him a wider musical education, but the foundation of his love for music was forged in the family home, where his mother, Greta, led the family sing-songs whenever there were visitors and ensured that piano practice was done every day - no matter what!
Susan has always had a love for music and especially singing. She was very involved in her high school music department and played the lead role in several of their musical productions. She majored in music at university and was a member of several vocal music groups. She has tried her hand at piano, trombone and, more recently, cello, but she is happiest with a bodhran in her hand and a song on her lips.
Ciaran, therefore, was brought up in a home where music, and musical instruments, were part of the everyday fabric of life. Despite Gordon’s futile efforts to introduce him to the piano, he did successfully introduce Ciaran to Canadian rock legends Rush, so it was only a matter of time before Ciaran demanded a drum kit to replicate the skills of Neil Peart! Although drumming is his first love, Ciaran followed in his parents’ footsteps onto the musical stage at school, playing the legendary role of Edna in Hairspray!
Gordon and Susan formed the White Cart Ceilidh Band in 2005, and as soon as he was old enough to carry Gordon’s share of the PA system, Ciaran was apprenticed to the band as drummer. They also played together in several church music bands and Ciaran proved to be a member of that elusive species – a drummer who is sensitive and responsive to what other musicians are doing!
Gordon had a successful career as a secondary school Mathematics teacher, and Susan became a skilled health and fitness instructor and highly respected youth work leader. Both have now retired from these careers and are hoping to spend more time with each other, the rest of the family, and, of course, have some new musical adventures.
Ciaran decided that music was his first love and passion and that he wanted to pursue it as a career. Over the past 10 years he has been in a whole host of ceilidh bands, tribute bands and original bands, most notably Howson, Ohnova, Dead by Monday and now Sister Madds. Ciaran has forged a reputation as an excellent solo performer and travels across Scotland entertaining in pubs, clubs and hotels, with forays further afield when the invitation arrives.
In early 2025, Ciaran decided the time was right to record a pile of original songs which both he and Gordon had stacked up. This momentum propelled Ciaran, Gordon and Susan to spend a week at Gran’s House recording studio in the Scottish borders in April, with the boys laying down almost all the instruments tracks themselves and all three providing the vocal talents. During the process, a name for this new musical project was required and, after requests via social media to friends and followers for inspiration, the name ‘Whyte Noise’ was chosen.
As a family, Gordon, Susan and Ciaran have always been passionate both about playing music together and enabling others to sing or play along and learn new songs (sometimes those songs are actually very old!). As they always say, it is ‘what we love to do’, and so the name for the album was born.
Whyte Noise is about celebrating family ties and musical traditions, while creating new threads to weave into this rich fabric. We hope you like the resultant cloth and find it a comfortable fit. Thank you for sharing in our journey.
